Eddie Bauer CirrusLite Down Hooded Jacket Review

The Eddie Bauer CirrusLite Down Hooded Jacket is my go-to garment for everyday warmth. I received it as a gift in December 2020. Since then, I’ve likely worn it some 200 days a year. It’s earned a permanent spot in my closet, and for good reason.

Comfort and Fit

The lightweight feel of this jacket is akin to wearing a warm little cloud. Initially, the smooth lining felt strange, but it’s not uncomfortable and I no longer notice it. My chest measures about 38″ and my jacket is size small. While wearing the jacket I feel no binding within my normal range of motion. The jacket fits easily over a mid-layer or sweater. The hood fits close to the head for warmth.

The hood fits close to the head.

Aesthetics

In true Eddie Bauer fashion, the jacket is trim, laid back, and mature. It’s not as shiny or puffy as some of the other jackets out there, but I prefer it that way. The logo is tasteful and doesn’t grab attention. Though it looks great overall, I have a few gripes: First, untucked button-down shirts sometimes peek out from below the hem of the jacket, which I don’t like (see images below). Second, the hood gives the jacket a technical feel, and the close fit isn’t flattering on the head. If I bought another CirrusLite jacket, I would opt for the non-hooded version.

Material and Durability

The shell and lining are made from a smooth, thin, surprisingly tough nylon fabric. I’ve worn the jacket (against my better judgement) while stomping through face-high Tennessee thorns and bushes. It has yet to tear. After two years, the only indication of age is a couple white feathers poking between the seams. Also, I haven’t noticed any change in the jacket’s warmth.

Applications

I often wear this jacket over a t-shirt or sweater. It’s comfortable in temperatures ranging from 40 – 60 degrees. The value of this jacket lies in its versatility. You can wear it inside, outside in moderate weather, as outerwear, or as a mid-layer. Be aware that it’s not heavy-duty. The jacket doesn’t offer much wind resistance, and while it dries quickly, it’s not waterproof. It’s also not going to provide the toasty, oven-like feel preferable for mountaineering or duck hunting. But for a typical day running errands or on the trail, it’s a perfect fit.
